The Universidad Internacional do Cuanza (International University of Cuanza, UNIC) celebrated its 5th anniversary by organizing a scientific conference that highlighted the transforming role of academia in human and social development.
The event brought together local and national authorities, students, teachers, and members of the community under the slogan “Academia, Science, and Extension: their contribution to human development.” Among the distinguished guests was the Provincial Governor of Bié, Dr. Celeste Elavoco David Adolfo, who highlighted the relevance of higher education in the progress of the region.
FUNIBER, as a promoter of academic excellence, played a key role in the event through its collaboration in the ClinicalSIM project, which presented innovative simulation tools for nursing learning. Additionally, the lecture “Maternal and Child Malnutrition in Angola,” presented by Professors Virginia Kambani and Jaime Azpiazu, shared profound reflections on the challenges of global health, underlining FUNIBER’s commitment to issues of international impact.
UNIC’s rector, Dr. Carlos Martínez, thanked FUNIBER for its support and highlighted how this scientific conference reinforces the role of the university as an engine of change in the community. Dr. Fernando Maia, president of the Instituto Superior Politécnico do Bié (Higher Plytechnic Institute of Bié, ISPB), opened the event with a lecture on the importance of scientific research in national development.
The event included a diverse program that included thematic conferences, cultural presentations, book exhibitions, a healthcare fair with free medical services such as blood sugar and malaria testing, and activities promoted by the different faculties of the university. These initiatives not only strengthened the link between academia and the community but also reflected the positive impact of the education promoted by FUNIBER.
Opinions by students and professionals
Adalberto Gervásio, a fourth-year student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Law, said, “This academic conference will contribute significantly to the student community, promoting knowledge and facilitating the exchange of experiences between students and professionals. We know that a scientific conference involves not only students but also scientific entities, such as book authors. It was a very enriching experience from which I learned a lot.”
António Cambinda, student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management, also shared his thoughts, “It is a very important activity for the academic world, as it brings together several faculties with a single purpose: science. This meeting allows for reconciliation and the practice of knowledge among all.” He added that his expectations were fully met.
Mário Diniz, student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, highlighted the benefits of interacting with other universities, “Students will derive many benefits from this scientific conference, as they will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss sensitive topics with other institutions also bringing their contributions.”
The event was also attended by Angolan journalist Sérgio Rodrigues, a leading figure of the Angolan Public Television (TPA). In an interview, he expressed his satisfaction with participating in the event and praised UNIC’s scientific and educational capabilities, stating, “If possible, I would like my children to study here.”
