The Universidade Internacional do Cuanza (UNIC), through the University Extension Office, together with the Students’ Association, organized a talk in connection with the Healthy Women March campaign, focusing on issues related to women’s intimate health and myths and truths about contraceptive methods. The talk took place last Friday, March 15, on the UNIC campus.
The first part of the lecture was chaired by the professor of nursing clinical Dr. João Vitor Calvo, who took the audience through the topic of intimate hygiene and the bacterial and fungal infections that affect women. His explanation was based on the manual on women’s intimate health drawn up by the University Extension in collaboration with the professor himself and FUNIBER‘s Acción Social.
In the second session, Dr. Flávia Amaral led the audience to a better understanding of contraceptive methods and the myths and truths surrounding the subject. The lecture was marked by moments of great interaction between the audience and the speakers, who showed that they had many doubts about the subject.
At the end of the lecture, João Vitor took stock of the activity: “The feedback was positive and I felt that both men and women were very interested in learning more about these issues. I’m proud of the work and the aim is to take the message to many other women and more topics like this will be dealt with from now on in lectures at UNIC.”
The student Premice Sakarov, too, was delighted with the educational and taboo-free way in which the topics were covered. She called for women to feel freer to talk about issues related to their bodies and for those who attended, like her, not to keep the information to themselves. “Take it with you so that more people have this information,” she said.
Nursing student Rafael António, who actively participated in the lecture, stressed: “And it’s not just women who should know more about these issues, it’s important that men also know more about intimate female issues, so that they can get to know their partners better or any woman they live with on a daily basis.”
The lecture was attended by the Rector of UNIC, Dr. Carlos Jélvez, the Vice-Rector for Science, Dr. Maria Helena Rodríguez, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Jorge Molina, UNIC professors and staff, the student community, the media and society in general. There were also cultural moments of dance and music that marked the activity.
In addition to the round table, UNIC prepared the Women’s Intimate Health Manual, to provide information that helps in women’s self-care and that serves as an instrument of health awareness.
The activities were organized by UNIC through a partnership between the Extension Area and collaborating entities such as the Ibero-American University Foundation (FUNIBER) through the Social Action area, the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), and in interface with the Erasmus+ project CLINICALSIM.
